An DroAn Dro wowed us during the 2010 summer fine arts festival so we decided to bring them back. The group performs traditional acoustic music with a creative twist. The band’s sound is built on a foundation of Celtic tunes, but while that may be the starting point, it’s not where the journey ends. At an An Dro performance, you’ll hear traditional Irish melodies, medieval French songs, Breton ballads, Scandinavian refrains, Appalachian influences, Latin rhythms, and African drums, all injected with an improvisational flair that at times resembles jazz.

Ben Bedford in concertThe Howmet Playhouse is pleased to once again present Ben Bedford, who appeared with his wife Kari on our stage in April 2010. Ben’s powerful folk music draws on both modern and historical stories of America. With an understated intensity, he delivers intriguing sketches of America, its individuals, their victories, and their struggles. Poignant, but never sentimental, Bedford’s portrait-like songs capture the vitality of his characters and draw the listener deep into the narratives. In July of 2010, Ben was named one of the “50 most significant Folk singer-songwriters of the past 50 years” by Rich Warren of WFMT Chicago. Join us to celebrate 95 years of the Howmet Playhouse with Ben’s great stories and music!

The Howmet Playhouse is thrilled that Max and Ruth Bloomquist will be returning to our stage; they last appeared here during the Spring 2010 season. A Michigan-loving band the Bloomquists are always a favorite. They charm their audiences playing acoustic Americana music with roots in folk, bluegrass, and traditional country.
A fan of all genres of music, Katie Beaman finds herself most at home when she has a guitar in her hands and a tune on her lips. She has been playing and singing since she was nine. Her favorite musicians are The Beatles, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, and Mumford & Sons, and their influence is definitely apparent in the musical style of this 16-year-old Whitehall native. She has been working on several original songs that are soulful and honest, reflecting the tone of the groups that inspire her most. A junior at Whitehall High School, Katie plans to pursue music as a career. The Playhouse is pleased to give her the opportunity to open for Max and Ruth.

The Nuveen Community Center for the Arts recently offered a theatre workshop that gave eight adults the chance to be bitten by the acting bug. With Alice Gambel donating her time as director, the one-act abstract play, The Interview by Jean-Claude Van Itallie, was pieced together over the winter and will be performed for the public. The play itself will last 35 minutes with a short discussion following. About half of the actors have never performed on stage before and we hope you will support the following actors in their endeavor to bring a unique piece of theatre to the White Lake public: Cindy Beth Davis-Dykema, Lyndon Mair, Brenden Gibbs, Kim Patterson, Janelle Mair, Ross Currie, Katie Trzaska, and Beth Pickard.
